My Boss: My god?

“A pessimist is someone who believes that when her cup runneth over she’ll need a mop.”~ Barbara Johnson

“My boss told me to get my butt in gear. I told him I was shiftless.”~ Jay London

In life, a majority of working class adults had/have a boss who thought (s)he was a mini god. A boss that made a good job terrible. A boss that made going to work a scary chore. No matter how much you love your job, if your boss is a nightmare, you will never find fulfillment on that job. A lot of people have experiences of horrible bosses that will make you wonder about the way some companies appoint leadership. I know of a friend who left a high paying job with great benefits for a lesser paying job. She took a $40,000.00 pay cut just to get away from a terrible boss. When I asked her how she was coping after a few months on the new job, she said her peace of mind and reduced stress level made up for the pay cut.

There are bosses that have no business leading people because they can’t even lead themselves. Now I understand your boss does not have to be your friend, the job of a boss is to lead employees to achieve the organization’s goals. Inherent in every good leader is the ability to lead. Right? You would think so. There are some people who because of tenure or nepotism are made bosses. These individuals have no leadership quality and the organization suffers for their inability to lead. I have heard so many scary stories of bosses who sexually harass subordinates, or who target an employee because the employee does not “kiss his/her ass.” I always say nobody can afford to pay me to kiss his/her ass.  And because of this mentality, I know I have to bring my “A game” to work.

In a society where jobs are few and far in-between, it’s not shocking for an employee to see and treat his/her boss as a mini god. And some bosses do take advantage to lord it over their employees. What happens when an employee is dedicated and of great value to the organization but because (s)he refuses to treat the boss as a mini god, the boss makes the employee’s life miserable on the job? Well, eventually, the organization starts to suffer because productivity diminishes and rate of employee turn over increases. This problem is more prevalent in a one-man owned small business. If you work for a boss that requires you to worship him/her, and continues to make your life miserable, then my advise is start looking to jump ship. You know why? Stress is a killer and immediately you get sick, you’ll be replaced at your job faster than you can get a hospital bed. So, find a job that gives you peace of mind and job satisfaction. You may have one and not the other but better half than a mini god who is impossible to please. Once you start down the road to making your boss your mini god, the expectations can overwhelm and consume you. Leaving you stressed out and sick.

Remember that outside of work, you need to live your life to the fullest. You need to have a balanced life. Your job cannot and should not consume the majority of your life leaving you with little to no time to socialize with family and friends. The only God you should serve is your father in heaven. Mini gods at work that make life depressing for you are slowly eating away at your soul. Remember, you are responsible for you. Your happiness and contentment should not be located solely at your job. When you make your job the source of your happiness, you will make your boss your mini god. And sooner or later, you will begin to feel the pressures of having a mini god who is human and imperfect just like you.
