Wives of Police Officers: Stand Tall

“Understand, our police officers put their lives on the line for us every single day. They’ve got a tough job to do to maintain public safety and hold accountable those who break the law.” ~Barack Obama

“Behind every strong police officer there’s even a stronger family who stands by them, supports them and loves them with all their hearts.” ~ Unknown

When we started dating, I felt very uncomfortable standing beside him because he was always “packing.” The gun made me feel uneasy. I had NEVER been that close to a gun my entire life and now, I’m supposed to get used to having one around me. “Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it” he always told me. Seven years down the line, I’m most certainly used to him “packing.” You see, I’m one of the few privileged women married to a man in blue.  I salute my fellow police wives. As a police wife, be prepared to hear stories that will make your head spin. The truly disgusting stories, the heart breaking stories, the laugh till you cry stories and the stories you just can’t wrap your head around. You also get to hear stories of ladies (you know yourselves) who try to hit on/flirt with our men in blue while on duty (come on!!! he’s on duty protecting you and earning a paycheck for us wives).

Every single day he puts on his uniform and heads out, I always tell him to “be safe.” I also always pray in my heart for God’s protection because I know- the Spirit who lives in him is greater than the spirit (perp) who lives in the world- 1 John 4:4(b). As a police wife, you can’t brag that your husband works forty hours a week (no bankers hours). You also cannot guarantee he will make it to every family function as duty calls and he has to heed to that call immediately. You get used to the fact that he is never off-duty. Dude be trying to pull people over when we are all dressed, I’m looking sexy and going out on a date. You get used to text messages being replied with a “10-4.” You also get used to dinners you painstakingly cook not being eaten as the long hours and wild encounters drain this man in blue at the end of his shift. Similarly, as a police wife, you have no idea what it is like to sit facing the door at a restaurant. That’s always his spot (like I said, he is always mentally on duty/alert).

I have accepted some truths about being married to a police officer. The job is an extremely dangerous occupation. It’s a natural instinct for people to run away from dangerous situations, but inherent in every man in blue is the instinct to run towards danger. Police officers, always have a hero’s heart. Ready to preserve, protect and defend. That my friend is why every police officer’s wife should hold her head up high. See, we keep these strong, stern looking, ticket wielding heroes in check. We also support them emotionally, spiritually, and keep the marriage bed smoking hot. As a wife of a police officer, when he comes home at the end of his shift, I want him to know he is back to his solace, where with these hands of mine, I share and carry the burdens society throws on his shoulders. That is why I stand tall as a police officer’s wife. Salute!!!!
